Everything flows downstream

Or, in my case, down into my yard. True to her word, my insurance adjuster hired a plumber with a camera and scope to come out and "see snake" my drain. His findings? The water that empties from my sump pump, which is supposed to travel through the yard via a small black corrugated pipe and into my french drain (why do they call it a french drain? Is is common in France? Must do some research on that.), never actually reaches my french drain. It travels 4 or 5 feet, then stops, seeps back into my yard, and re-enters my house, is pumped back out, and continues to make this cyclical journey until my sump pump motor finally cries "uncle" and gives up. What to do from here? Dig up my yard to find out why and try to repair it. Cost to me? A mere $800.00 or so. And the hits just keep on coming.

Non, mon ami. You're all wet if you think French drains have anything whatsoever to do with France. In fact, they were invented in Concord by Henry French, father of sculptor Daniel Chester French, whom we must flood with congratulations for their effectiveness.

Henry French was a judge and farmer, and as the latter a veritable fount of information on drainage. He was a great local source to tap on the subject, one which farmers with wet fields, barns, and roads lapped right up. In fact, his knowledge was so deep and unsinkable, he wrote a lengthy book on the subject, one whose subtitle is so long it takes a moment to fully drink in:

Farm Drainage
The Principles, Processes, and Effects of Draining Land with Stones, Wood, Plows, and Open Ditches and Espcially with Tiles< Including Tables of Rain-Fall, Evaporation, Filtration, Evcavation, Capacity of Pipes; Cost and Number to the Acre, of Tiles, Etc, Etc.
